Rehabilitation using alternative & complementary therapies. At Eqizz, very experienced, knowledgeable staff who are able to provide methods and solutions to physical and behavioural problems in horses and ponies performs rehabilitation schooling. As each horse or pony has its own unique personality and instinctive behaviour, rehabilitation programmes are tailored to suit the needs of each equine and its environment, as there is no ‘one size fits all’ method. Rehabilitation schooling is advantageous when the horse has a change in behaviour due to pain/injury, a bad experience or through confusion in communication and becomes resistant and unwilling to work resulting in problems such as rearing, bucking, spinning and bolting. Through re-establishing communication, trust, respect and understanding, horses and ponies can be brought back to a suitable level of work. In addition, confidence courses are available which benefit horse and rider combinations that may have lost confidence after injury, trauma or rider error or may help those that are training a young horse for the first time. Horses and ponies with physical, emotional and behavioural problems are spoilt in the range of practitioners and complementary therapists at their disposal. Therapies include: Hydrotherapy, McTimoney Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Sports Massage, Physiotherapy, Bowen Technique, Reiki, Shiatsu, Animal Healing, Equissage, Laser Therapy, Bach Flower Remedies, Feed Supplements and Remedial Farriery.

Cold Water HydrotherapyOur most popular treatment is Cold Water Hydrotherapy where the combination of ultra-cool and ultra-high saline water provides valuable analgesic, anti-inflammatory and cleansing effects on leg injuries. Hydrotherapy can treat a broad spectrum of distal traumas including fractures and splints, joint conditions, laminitis, wounds and tendon/ligament damage. Research has shown that regular use of hydrotherapy is beneficial for horses and ponies that work, compete or train hard, where distal damage may be more likely to occur. Regular treatments have shown to promote an increase in bone strength, circulation, hoof growth, elasticity and flexibility in the joints.
Success storyMax, a 17 year old retired eventer sustained check ligament damage in both front legs and the deep flexor tendon in his off fore. After scanning both legs Max was placed on a specially designed rehabilitation programme. To begin the programme, Max was given cold water hydrotherapy spa treatments every day for 21 days until the swelling and heat had gone down. After 21 days Max began gentle exercise of a 10 minute walk three times a week followed by a hydrotherapy treatment. Then each week for the following 15 weeks Max was exercised for longer three times a week followed by a spa treatment (including slow trot at 4 weeks and gently progressing to canter at 11 weeks) until he was brought back to suitable level of work. Scanning both legs, after the programme, showed no further damage effect to the check ligaments and deep flexor tendon. Max has regular spa treatments to maintain strength and flexibility in his tendons and joints. Without the use of spa treatments the injuries would not have repaired as rapidly and effectively as if given box rest, where the length of recovery could exceed 12 months. Using hydrotherapy rehabilitation programmes recovery can take less than 6 months.
