Horse Spa

Hydrotherapy for Horses

Using cold or sea water for treating equine injuries and strengthening horses’ legs is an age-old philosophy and is now used regularly by many of the world’s top equestrian professionals. Best-known for using salt water for promoting strength and suppleness was probably racehorse trainer Ginger McCain, whose treble-Grand National winner Red Rum was famously exercised on Southport Beach every morning, invaluable — according to Ginger — in the cure of some chronic foot problems.

The spa is filled with cold, filtered saline (Between two and four degrees Celsius), whilst the horse stands inside. Jets of water, high in salt content, along with dissolved oxygen, massage the limbs. With the salt drawing fluid from inflamed areas, the water cleans wounds and promotes healing.

Axewater Equestrian Centre’s hydrotherapy spa has been proved to dramatically speed up the healing process in many leg injuries, including tendonitis. It is also a drug-free treatment reducing the concussive effects suffered by horses travelling, jumping, racing and training on hard surfaces.

As well as successfully treating tendon, ligament and concussive injuries, the spa can help with general swelling and stiffness, sore shins, fractures and splints. Joint conditions such as OCD, degenerative joint disease and arthritis have also improved dramatically following spa therapy.

Although the spa is normally only filled to mid-forearm depth, an attachment can be fitted to use on other parts of the anatomy, enabling treatment to speed-up the healing of open wounds, infections, lymphangitis and soft tissue damage.

Other Health Problems That Benefit From Spa Therapy

Other problems spa therapy can help include windgalls, laminitis and foot problems, overreach injuries, mud fever and cracked heels. It can also help promote hoof regrowth.

For those whose horses suffer extensive stress to the legs, tendons and ligaments, through competition, racing and travelling, hydrotherapy is very effective as a preventative for jar-up and stiffness, improving overall strength, suppleness and mobility.

Our Facilities & Therapists

Axewater, situated in east Devon, just a stone’s throw from the M5 and A303, has superb facilities to complement the spa, including infra-red solarium, Claydon five-horse walker, round pen and 60x30m all-weather arena. Axewater offers a rehabilitation service to compliment hydrotherapy treatment for horses that have had a break from work. Experienced and qualified complementary therapists are also on hand including equine osteopath, acupuncturist and shiatsu practitioner.

Treatments

Owners and riders are welcome to bring their horses to Axewater for one-off treatments, at a cost of £25 per session, this is often the case when spa therapy is used for preventative or strengthening purposes. Those with injuries or problems which need to be treated on a more regular basis can stay at Axewater on full livery for as long as necessary, as decided between owners, riders, vets and Axewater staff. Full therapy livery – which includes care, spa therapy, solarium treatment, horsewalking, feed (not supplements), forage, all as needed – costs just £180 per week, with any rehabilitation work or further exercise charged as extra. It is worth bearing in mind that hydrotherapy is covered by most equine insurers.
