Equine Hanna Somatics (EHS)
![]() |
Equine Hanna Somatics (EHS) is a truly unique method for addressing pain, stress, movement and behaviour related issues. Originating from California, it differs from the manipulative therapies approach of adjusting a body to improve skeletal alignment and joint mobility. Instead EHS asks each horse to have far more voluntary involvement.
The Theory Behind EHSEHS practitioners understand that bones only move because tension from muscles pulls on them. Horses muscles often become chronically contracted due to repeated physical or emotional stress. The brain controls the muscles; therefore the only way to change the tension in the muscles (and allow the bones to come into alignment) is to change the message that the brain is sending the muscle to contract. During EHS sessions, practitioners guide horses through a series of slow, safe and gentle movements tailored to individual needs. The assisted movements are called pandiculations, which is a full body muscular contraction and slow elongation. |

PandiculationsAll healthy vertebrates are capable of performing a pandiculation. Picture a cat or a dog rising from a sleep state, they immediately proceed in stiffening their muscles, followed by a slow release and lengthen. This prepares them for voluntary action, and enables them to have greater control of previously stiff muscles, as is also the case for horses and humans. Pandicular movements often have an immediate impact upon previously contracted muscles. They can very quickly become softer, longer and less painful, this promotes greater joint mobility and reduces the risk of tendon/ligament injuries. Horses find the work very relaxing so you can often expect a good helping of yawning, chewing and licking of lips, also you may notice an improvement in posture/conformation, co-ordination, performance and behaviour. Equine Hanna Somatics is complimentary to many other healing methods and also compatible with all types of equine address such as shoeing, foot trimming, dentistry, saddle fitting and so on. |
